The quality of the arbitrator is crucial to the conduct of the arbitration. The problem of finding a suitable arbitrator may present a lesser degree of difficulty in domestic arbitration. But this is not the case in international arbitration. It may be most difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain the availability and qualifications of many persons competent to act in an international arbitration. Those involved in selecting arbitrators know from experience that they are often frustrated in their desire to collect the names of all persons who deserve consideration. It is impossible, even for the most active and wide-ranging lawyer, to obtain on his own appropriate information on possible candidates. He may consult others, but their knowledge will also be limited. Furthermore, international arbitration awards are most frequently kept confidential, so that outsiders cannot judge arbitrators by the products of their performances. Institutions engaged in administering international arbitrations normally keep their lists confidential. In any event, these lists are not the products of the kind of comprehensive, and therefore costly and time consuming, search for eligible candidates that we conducted for the publication of this volume.

In 1989, the Parker School of Columbia University School of Law published its Guide to International Arbitration and Arbitrators. This publication was the first ever to offer detailed biographies of persons eligible for appointment as an international arbitrator. The second edition of the Guide, published in 1992, contained more than double the number of names listed in the first and the present edition contains over 1,000 names with accompanying biographies.

The impact of the Guide/Roster has not gone unnoticed and has stimulated imitation. But The Roster continues to be unique in determining whom it will list by reference to objective standard relating to arbitration experience, in the detail of the information it provides about each person it lists, and in not permitting a person whose name is listed to pay for being listed. We are confident that this will continue to make the Roster the best in its field.

The readily accessible format of The Roster allows one to locate arbitrators either alphabetically, by nationality, by language or by more than 110 areas of specialization. This practical research tool also includes the International Bar Association (IBA), American Arbitration Association (AAA) and American Bar Association (ABA) Codes of Ethics for International Arbitrators, background information and a bibliography.
