Alan Watson, Distinguished Research Professor and Ernest P. Rogers Professor at the University of Georgia Law School, is a renowned authority on Roman law, comparative law, legal history, and law and religion. He has published nearly 150 books and articles in these fields. Most notably, Legal Transplants: An Approach to Comparative Law (1974), Society and Lagal Change (1977) and The Evolution of Western Private Law (2000).

In his current work professor Watson deals with a controversial issue, namely the development towards unification of European private law. This book, however, is different from other studies on a common private law for the European Union as it does not deal directly with the advisability of a common private law code for the whole of the European Union set out in directives from the Community. The aim of this study is rather to underline the importance of "the lessons that may be learned from legal history for the formation of any new ins commune".
