The book emanates from the seminar Environmental Liabilities in Ports and Coastal Areas – Focus on Public Authorities and Other Actors, held in Korpoström, Finland, in August 2010. The seminar was a follow–up to an earlier seminar held in 2007, also in Finland (Shipwrecks in International and National Law – Focus on Wreck Removal and Pollution Prevention).

The aim of the seminar in 2010 was to examine legal questions related to environmental liabilities of different actors involved in the operation, maintenance and surveillance of ports and fairways. These actors include both public authorities and private parties.

Whereas the point of departure of the seminar was Finnish national law, the issues covered were studied and discussed also in the light of international and EU law. The papers delivered are presented in this book.
